Family reunification is a legally defined purpose under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and Canada's immigration and refugee processes operate with this purpose in mind.

Sponsorship of Spouse or Children (if there are dependent children, they are also included in this program)
The application for spouse sponsorship consists of two parts: first, the sponsor submits an application to become a sponsor, and second, the application is made to sponsor the spouse and accompanying children to become permanent residents of Canada; see:IRCC Guide 5525
You need to meet the following criteria to determine whether you are a sponsor for your family member.
- Age of 18 or older
- The applicant is a Canadian citizen, a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident of Canada; and I must be residing in Canada.
- If a Canadian citizen is residing abroad, they must have a plan to return to Canada to live when their spouse or child becomes a permanent resident.
- A permanent resident residing outside of Canada is not eligible.
- Applicants residing in Quebec must also meet the eligibility criteria to become a sponsor in Quebec. Quebec’s conditions to be a sponsor.
Note: Sponsoring adopted children falls under a different program, the 'Sponsorship of Adopted Children and Other Relatives,' which has specific requirements for both sponsors and sponsored individuals.

To become a sponsor, you need to be
- Age of 18 or older

Super visa
The Super Visa is used for grandparents or parents to visit and stay with their children (grandchildren) who reside in Canada. Unlike regular multiple-entry visas valid for 10 years, the Super Visa allows grandparents or parents to stay in Canada for up to 2 years at a time, whereas regular multiple-entry visas only allow visitors to stay for a maximum of 6 months per entry.
